This is a worthy objective and one that is accomplished by the authoritative chapters provided by leaders in the vaccine field. Audience: The book is comprehensive in scope and depth and can serve as a reference in the field of vaccinology. However, it is very readable and both beginners and experts in the field will find it stimulating. The editor, Dr. Levine, is one of the leaders in vaccine development and has had a long and distinguished career in this field. He has also chosen experts in the field to author the various chapters. Features: The chapters are an update on most of the vaccine candidates that are under development and many that have already been licensed and are in general use. A particularly appealing aspect of this edition is the attention devoted to new vaccine approaches such as new adjuvants, DNA-based vaccines, boost-prime strategies, and the role of cytokines in immune responses. Not all vaccines summarized in earlier versions are included in this edition. For example, pertussis vaccines were well summarized in an earlier edition but are omitted from this edition. However, this is not necessarily a shortcoming as long as one has access to the earlier edition. The only shortcoming of the book is the paucity of illustrations and diagrams in a number of the chapters. Assessment: This is an authoritative book on vaccinology and one that everyone interested in this topic should have. This updated edition provides new information that was not included in earlier versions.
