The book consists of nine chapters that address in a structured way the complex problem of corrosion of ceramics. After a brief introduction to the topic in Chapter 1, an extensive chapter describes the fundamentals of ceramic corrosion, discussing the different forms of corrosion and the different processes taking place. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the techniques available for corrosion analysis, and on specific relevant test procedures from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) with a brief description of each test procedure. Chapters 5 to 7 describe the corrosion of specific types of ceramic materials, divided into crystalline materials, glassy materials and composite materials. The book concludes with a chapter on the effect of corrosion on the properties of ceramic materials (Chapter 8) and methods used to minimize corrosion (Chapter 9). The book covers a wide range of types of ceramics, including composite materials used in airspace industry, and biomaterials.

The text is organized well, is written in a clear manner, and the author places particular emphasis in explaining fundamental mechanisms and in distinguishing between different types of materials and processes. The sections within each chapter are divided nicely, making it easy for the reader to find relevant information. The text includes a large number of graphs, equations, and plenty of fundamental chemical reactions that demonstrate the various attack processes. The book is written for ceramic scientists and engineers who need information on the effect of corrosion on ceramic materials, and requires a fundamental knowledge of the types and structure of ceramic materials. However, the organization of the text and the index of terms facilitate very much the corrosion scientist to find information on the corrosion processes of a wide range of ceramic materials
