In this updated version of the first edition (Newall, Anderson, Davidson, 1996), the current authors, all (Ph.D.) pharmacists, provide an update of a useful source of information for healthcare professionals. Both editions provide the style of information that pharmacists may find especially useful, though it will probably not appeal to lay people. While all the authors were once with the University of London, Dr. Anderson has moved to the Medicines Control Agency, the UK equivalent of the FDA. The update is significant for 10 of the monographs and less so for another 33. Seven are entirely new to this edition (bilberry, cats claw, cranberry, ephedra, java tea, melissa, and milk thistle), providing a total of 148 herbs. Inclusion in the book requires that an herbal product be available for sale in the UK, particularly in pharmacies. Many of them are not well known in the U.S., however, and unfortunately, the regulatory status of the preparations outside the UK is usually not covered. The preface mentions tha t this edition refers to 65 general references whereas the first edition referred to only 35.
